Week 6 - A Day in the Classroom

. Do you ever predict the day’s weather from your early morning observations?
. Can you remember diagnosing a sick pet, a child, 
or a sibling on the basis of the symptoms you noticed?
. Did you ever vary just one ingredient in a recipe and come up with a new dish?
. Do you ever shop at the supermarket by
 arranging your grocery list according to the aisles in the store?
. Do you keep records of your expenditures
and then sort them according to categories?
Do you have a separate notebook for these categories?


  Science is a way of exploring nature.
  Science is both a method and a set of ideas.
Science is a subject in which you expect the unexpected.



 Investigate and you will find,
New information of some kind,
Question all your observations,
Understand through your explanations,
Integrate what you have discovered,
Reflect and share what you have uncovered.

Estimated over 350 students/family members attended the science night!


The night was not about students and parents learning scientific facts.  Instead the family science night was about students and their families participating in an educational exciting experience together.  The idea was FUN.  Science concepts were not to be shoved down their throats but the concept was to have a positive and enjoyable family experience at school. 

"Moreover, research tells us that parents’ attitudes affect their children’s attitudes, and some adults’
fears of science have a negative impact on their children" (Kober, 1993).

Week 5 - A Day in the Forest


A Day in the Forest


Riddle:

●  Fruits and vegetables are edible parts of plants.
●  In everyday language, fruits are usually those plant parts that taste sweet, particularly those we get from trees, such as apples, pears, peaches, oranges, and bananas.
●  In scientific classification, however, sweetness is not the important factor. A vegetable is a root, stem, leaf, or flower of a plant. The  fruit is the part of the plant that is a container for the seeds. To be even more specific, a fruit is the ripened ovary of a flowering plant.
●  Nuts, corn, wheat, tomatoes, peas, beans, cucumbers, pumpkins, and squash are really fruits.

found out some were seedless - manmade

-Students in the 3rd grade class at Linda Vista sparked with excitement on the first day of school after seeing aquarium tanks in their new classroom. They were eager to find out what the aquariums were for, and found that they were going to raise craw fish for science studies later in the year. The students were very eager about new life additions to their classroom.
